For those who enjoy the sport, the Royal Birkdale Golf Course is one of the most recognised courses in the world. If it is not because of its stunning eighteen-hole course in the heart of the Birkdale Hills, then it is because of its impressive history with one of the world’s most acclaimed golfing competitions.
With humble beginnings of just nine founding members and a small plot of land to build a nine-hole course, it did not take long for this forward-thinking club to transform its narrative; from a small, local golf club, to an international venue that has been graced by some of the world’s golfing elite. Beginning with a relocation to its current home, the golf club soon gained royal status and asserted its dominance in the world of golf.
To date, the Royal Birkdale has played host to an impressive list of competitions including the Walker Cup, Ryder Cup and several Open Championships. An array of inspiring champions have played on the course from Jack Nicklaus and Justin Rose to Yani Tseng and Dame Laura Davies.
1The Royal Birkdale Golf Course was awarded royal status in 1951 by HRH King George VI. This new status allowed the club to become the international colossus it is today. 2Ahead of its time in many respects, in 1889, the golf club voted unanimously to allow ladies to use the course, albeit only for a maximum of three days a week.3To date, the Royal Birkdale Golf Course has played host to the Open Championships nine times including its 100th event, won by Lee Trevino. 4The course has been partly designed by John Henry Taylor, who is considered to be one of the best golfers of all times. He won the Open Championship five times. 5In early 2018, the respected Golf Digest magazine rated the Royal Birkdale Golf Course as 15th best in the world, the second highest in England.
Things To Do
Play Golf
As one of the world’s best golf courses, there are golfing enthusiasts that travel across the globe to play on the acclaimed course. Luckily for locals, the Royal Birkdale Golf Club is just a matter of minutes away from the homes of local residents, who can enjoy playing on the course whenever, although it does come at a price to play on privileged grounds.
At eighteen-holes long, the course itself does take several hours to complete, based on how good guests are, of course! As a championship course, even the most confident of players will find it a challenge, from the first hole which is considered one of the toughest on the course, to the last hole which is surrounded by bunkers and out-of-bounds area.
